Required to Forgive

Christians are famous for forgiveness.

They are required to do it, no matter how serious the offence.

In fact, Christians are required to not just do it once, but seventy times seven.

I’m all for forgiveness, especially if true repentance and reparations are made.

However, offenders are particularly fond of this highly valued Christian value.

To them forgiveness means never being held accountable.

Have you noticed that the times it is insisted that you must forgive is almost always by the perpetrators?

Enter celebrities and those with power who are being exposed for horrible abuses towards girls, women, and others. We see a slew of them appealing or converting to this Christian value of forgiveness. Often with fake apologies to grease the process. They know that their chances of escaping accountability and being able to continue on with their lives and careers are far greater when the Christian majority of their followers do as they’re expected and let them off and let them go.

Like I said, I’m all for forgiveness. I’m also for true repentance and real reparations.

But the concept of forgiveness was not invented to provide a loophole for serial perpetrators.
